October has brought the chill I’ve been waiting for, an excuse to light the first indoor fire of the season, and fill the house with the warm aromas of roasting chicken and apple pie.

…and horror movie season is in full swing.  After cheering the Yankees on to a playoff game win, we turned off the lights to watch The Wolf Man by firelight.  Werewolf movies and the full Hunter’s moon on October 13th inspired a new moon-themed playlist.  Listen to it on Spotify, here.

The Game Plan

  • Start the day before with the first steps for prepping the chicken.  If you want to get even more of a head start, make the pie dough and whip the butternut squash the day before, too.
  • Early in the day, bake the pie.
  • Start about 3 hours before dinner to get the chicken roasting, then enjoy a nibble of cheese and crackers while it roasts.
  • Finish the sides and make the gravy while the chicken rests.
